By the end of 2008 consumers will have the ability to
utilise low-power switching solutions through Green Ethernet™ technology. This
will be possible through a green initiative instituted by D-Link, a leading
networking and communication solution provider. Estimates indicate that Green
Ethernet™ technology will allow more than 20% of global network consumers to
save additional energy. Through these actions, it is hoped that the amount of
energy use around the world can be reduced.
How Does Green Ethernet ™ Technology Work?
- Through
Green Ethernet™ technology, a switch will be able to determine when a computer
is turned off. It can then respond by placing the port in standby mode, thus
reducing the total amount of power that is utilised by the port. This can
result in energy savings of up to 80%.
- Green
Ethernet™ technology also allows the switch to detect cable length and adjust
the amount of power that is used accordingly without affecting performance. No
user intervention is required.
D-Link has already incorporated Green Ethernet ™
technology into several products, including their smart switches and Gigabit
unmanaged switches. In addition to these switches, D-Link also produces other
power saving devices such as low-power switches.
